Ubiquinol

The standard form of supplemental Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is called Ubiquinone and until recently, Ubiquinone was the only form of CoQ10 available. Now after many years of research, Japan’s largest CoQ10 producer has succeeded in developing a stable form of Ubiquinol - an active bioavailable form of CoQ10.

Following oral supplementation with the standard Ubiquinone form of CoQ10, most of it is reduced to the usable form of CoQ10, Ubiquinol, either during absorption or after the appearance of Coenzyme Q10 in the blood. Ubiquinol accounts for more than 80% of the total Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol pool in human plasma, intestine, and liver. As you age, not only do you produce less CoQ10, but your body becomes less efficient at converting CoQ10 to the active form - Ubiquinol.

Studies indicate that Ubiquinol is absorbed by the body more efficiently than Ubiquinone, increasing and maintaining blood plasma levels of CoQ10 by more than double that of the non-reduced Ubiquinone form of CoQ10. In one study, eight times more Ubiquinone than Ubiquinol was needed to achieve the same blood levels of CoQ10. Therefore, supplementing with Ubiquinol insures that your body gets the desired levels of CoQ10 that your body can easily and rapidly utilize.

Who should consider taking Ubiquinol instead of, or in addition to CoQ10 (Ubiquinone)?

Supplementing with Ubiquinol is especially important for individuals who may have difficulty with the natural conversion of CoQ10 to Ubiquinol such as:

  • The late middle-aged to elderly
  • Individuals suffering from specific conditions, especially related to oxidative stress including diabetics and those with liver disease

For everyone else, CoQ10 remains a vital supplement for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Anti-fatigue: Kaneka Corp. did a study to compare the anti-fatigue effects of the ubiquinol and ubiquinone forms of CoQ10. In this study, aged rats were selected to measure how long they could run on a treadmill. The control group using no CoQ10 showed a slight decline in running times. The group receiving the ubiquinone form of CoQ10 had a 60% increase in running time while the group receiving ubiquinol had a 150% increase in running time.

Diabetes: Type 2 diabetics suffer from elevated oxidative stress resulting in autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Japanese researchers found that as the day proceeded, so did levels of oxidative stress. This oxidative stress depleted ubiquinol levels faster than ubiquinone. In fact, diabetics had approximately 75% less ubiquinol than the non-diabetic control group.

Liver disease: Researchers at the University of Tokyo found that like Type 2 diabetics, people with certain types of liver disease including cirrhosis, hepatitis, and hepatoma, suffered from elevated oxidative stress which contributed to a decrease in ubiquinol levels without reducing levels of ubiquinone.

Q. Does the new ubiquinol product make the standard CoQ10 ubiquinone product obsolete?
A. No. The ubiquinone form of CoQ10, especially high bioavailable forms like CoQsol-CFTM, CoQ10 with Omega-3, and CoQ10 with BioperineTM have volume of solid data backing its efficacy. The majority of clinical and experimental investigations have been done using ubiquinone, demonstrating its positive nutritional support in the fight against aging including angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, hypertension, and many other conditions. Also we can’t forget that ubiquinone is an essential cofactor for the synthesis of ATP energy production. Both forms must be present for efficient ATP production. So, CoQ10 (ubiquinone) remains a vital supplement for maintaining a healthy lifestyle!

While the ubiquinone form of CoQ10 will continue to be a vital member of the dietary supplement industry, new ubiquinol studies like the above anti-fatigue, diabetes, and liver disease studies will continue, indicating specific uses for supplemental ubiquinol.

Q. Can I take both ubiquinone and ubiquinol?
A. Yes. Although mega doses of CoQ10 are not suggested for healthy individuals, many clinical studies have been performed to assess the safety and tolerability of high doses of CoQ10. In one ALS study, CoQ10 was safe and well tolerated in 31 subjects treated with doses as high as 3,000 mg/day for 8 months. NEUROLOGY 2005; 65: 1834-1836.
