The body produces SAM-e (S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine) by "combining the essential amino acid methionine and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body's primary energy molecule," explains Dallas Clouatre, PH.D., author of SAM-e: What You Need to Know. "SAM-e, sometimes called 'active methionine,' is what's called a methyl donor, contributing a methyl group to make new substances needed by your body."
A 2002 postmortem study by Japanese researchers found that levels of SAM-e were significantly decreased in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease, which, according to Clouatre, demonstrates that a lack of SAM-e "may be involved in some aspects of the cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease."
Other recent research has shown that SAM-e helps with depression, alcoholic liver disease, and prevention of liver cancer.
Clouatre concurs with the newest research, adding that SAM-e should be a top choice for alleviating mild-to-moderate depression. In addition, he says it can help diminish migraine headaches and enhance cognition.
Because of the fragile adenosine-methionine matrix of SAM-e, it has to be enteric-coated.
Suggested Usage: As a dietary supplement, take 1 tablet 1 to 2 times daily, preferably on an empty stomach.
