Phosphatidyl Serine is a phospholipid compound derived from soy lecithin that plays an essential role in cellular composition and communication. It works to maintain cell membrane fluidity and is vital to the function of membrane lipids. This Phosphatidyl Serine is encapsulated in Vcaps for a vegetarian formulation.
Phosphatidyl Serine, Acetyl L Carnitine and Alpha-GPC have produced small but measurable improvements in Alzheimer's patients. Alpha-GPC works better for vascular dementia (circulation related) than for Alzheimer's. Using Phosphatidyl Serine, double blind trials conducted in Italy, Belgium, and Germany, as well as in the United States, have documented benefits for older subjects with mild to moderate dementia.
For age associated memory loss, the single best-proven substance (whether nutritional or pharmacologic) is Phosphatidyl Serine. In a 1991 double-blind trial conducted on age-related cognitive decline by Crook and collaborator's, Phosphatidyl Serine at 300 mg per day for three months seemed to partially restore certain learning and recall capacities. The authors commented that their findings could be interpreted as evidence of Phosphatidyl Serine "turning back the clock" on age related cognitive decline (Crook TH and others, Neurology 1991;41:644).
But here again, potent combinations of vitamins, minerals and othomolecules are likely to have the best effectiveness in slowing abnormal declines in memory, learning concentration, mood, or adaptability to stress. Some other potentially useful supplements for this application are the vitamins folate, B6, B12, and E; the minerals magnesium and boron; and the orthomolecule Acetyl-l-carnitine.
