This is a useful oil. The fungal fighting properties of oil of oregano are supported by research led by Harry G. Preuss, M.D., professor of physiology and biophysics at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The study, which was published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, tested the efficacy of oregano oil against the fungal infection Candida albicans (better known as a yeast infection) in mice. The study concluded that "the daily oral administration of oregano oil may be highly effective in the prevention and treatment of candidiasis." Furthermore, the findings of two studies presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Nutrition held in Orlando, Florida, revealed that oil of oregano is just as effective as pharmaceutical antibiotics at killing bacteria."

Additional research led by Dr. Preuss tested the effects of the oregano oil on the common bacteria staphylococcus, which is becoming more drug-resistant and is the culprit in many infections. One in vitro study compared oregano oil to the drugs streptomycin, vancomycin, and penicillin, and found that it could inhibit staphylococcus ( strep throat ) growth as effectively as pharmaceutical antibiotics.

Studies performed by researchers at Cornell University, with results published in the March 1998 edition of The Quarterly Review of Biology, found that oregano inhibited every strain of bacteria they tested it against. This list included Bacilus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes, and two strains of staphylococcus. With anti-fungal and anti-bacterial abilities like these, it is easy to see why Business Week magazine said in its Oct. 22, 2001, issue that "oregano could turn into the next wonder drug."

Researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have determined that herbs are higher in antioxidant levels than fruits, vegetables, and even spices such as garlic. Oregano has 3 to 20 times higher antioxidant activity than the other herbs studied." Oregano has 42 times more antioxidant activity than apples, 30 times more than potatoes, 12 times more than oranges, and four times more than blueberries.

Oil of oregano is also a powerful painkiller. An article published in Phytotherapy Research describes how oregano oil superseded anti-inflammatory drugs in reversing pain and inflammation and is nearly as powerful as morphine as a painkiller. As published by Sarer, researchers describe its antiseptic powers as remarkable.
